Food Review-Ali Baba's Iranian Restaurant

Feels like having some Iranian delicacies??..or not really familiar of what an Iranian restaurant offers for your palate?then do read on this review of Ali Baba Iranian Restaurant, located right besides the traffic light opposite Great Eastern Mall, Jalan Ampang.

How did i ended up here at the first place?well it was actually a treat by my dear friend Az (thanks alot-next time can do again) who wanted to let us try some middle eastern cuisine..just to spice up our life alittle bit more :)

To tell you the truth, Iranian cuisine is quite alien to any Malaysian i would say as it is not like those typical Arabs delicacies that we are quite familiar with (due to overflowing mid-east students and tourist in Malaysia). You do find kebabs..and rice..bread and cheese..taste of olive oil but once you've tasted it you'll know the difference between these two.

Okay..lets see what are the things offered in this eatery...

Menu Cover

Selections of Main Courses and prices

Main courses mainly consist of rice dishes or bread with side dishes with options ranging from different types of kebabs..stews or roasted chicken..prices are at high sides though...

Apart from the mains..they also offer appetizers such as the following...to tell the truth..we had no idea how they all going to taste like and merely chose one which looks the most appetizing...

what are the drinks and beverages on offer??and what for dessert...feast your eyes on the following....

we've seen what are offered..now come the food tasting part..starting with the appetizer..we ordered this..combination of egg..cheese..with few dashes of olive oil..served with pita bread and also a simple salad with herbs

taste wise...the appetizer merely tasted like eating an egg sandwich..nothing special..and tasted bland...the salad is quite nice though...

the 6 of us intentionally ordered different mains to sample each others order and to give our own comments on the things that we've ordered...for myself i ordered Mahicheh..lamb shank served with Iranian rice..

the rice was fluffy and tender...the lamb itself is large in portion..taste wise?..again..there's just no "kick" to the flavour as the taste is mild and the taste of tomato totally dominated the whole taste of the gravy..to put it in a simple word..tasted like lamb cooked in Maggie tomato sauce-end- no spices-nothing.....

Eim and Wan ordered the Kebabs..one with rice and the other with bread...

these dishes were served with these accompaniments...

the kebabs are tender and grilled to perfection..and both tasted okay..we had hard time to figure out what type of leaves are actually served to us as pictured above??doesn't taste like mint nor compliment the kebabs very well..the yellow coloured gravy above is a life-saver for this dish..i might add...

Fifi ordered Zereshk Polo-mixture of bar-berries with iranian rice served with special chicken gravy...

well..for this dish we unanimously agreed that it looks better than it taste...a simply tasteless dish...

Alex and Az ordered the roasted chicken which was served with special gravy and pita bread...

this dish goes along with the theme for the dishes in this restaurant which is "tasteless"...the chicken were nicely roasted and tender but there's no taste of any herbs or marinates that you'll usually taste in your usual roasted chicken dishes..be it asian or western...

we wrapped up the whole "tasteless" dining experience with some iranian tea..cappucino and ice-creams..

the dessert are plain normal and nothing to shout about..you can even find the above in other eateries at cheaper price...

so at the end of the night..we all unanimously agreed that the foods served here are tasteless..overpriced..nothing special..

in all fairness..the ambiance is quite cosy and nice where you can have private dining time with your families and friends..parking space is abundance..

service was slow as we noticed small number of waiters tasked to attend to customers within a large area and most of the time calls from customers would be missed by these waiters..

maybe we're not familiar with the taste of Iranian food or maybe the foods are just plain tasteless..regardless of either...i don't see a return to this place in any near future....bye-bye Ali Baba...
